Traveling Tea Houseとは
「Traveling Tea House」は、アーティストあべさやか（私）と、茨城県にある精神科袋田病院関係者との協働作業から生まれたアートプロジェクトです。藍色に染めた布と蚊帳の空間で、藍茶のお茶会を行います。居合わせた数名から10名ほどの参加者はアーティスト自らふるまうお茶を飲み、語り合い、体験を共有することができます。
現在、私は院内で積み重ねた体験や関係者の思いをのせたお茶会の新たな開催場所を探しています。
What is Traveling Tea House?
“Traveling Tea House” is an art project created through a collaboration between artist Sayaka Abe (I) and staff and clients of Fukuroda Psychiatric Hospital in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.
Within a space made of indigo-dyed cloth and mosquito net, a tea party with indigo tea is held. For anywhere from a couple of people to around ten, tea is served by the artist, conversations are held, and experiences are shared together.
I am currently looking for new platforms to host tea parties that reflect my experiences within the hospital and the thoughts and voices of those involved in the project.
Traveling Tea Houseのはじまり
私は、2022年より茨城県大子町にある精神科袋田病院でアーティスト・イン・レジデンス(FS x FH artist in residence) に関わっています。
このプロジェクトが始まった当時は、まだ新型コロナによる厳しい制限があり、ワークショップなどの活動はオンラインで行わざるを得ませんでした。デジタルデバイスを介して行う非接触（非対面）のコミュニケーションは、使う五感が制限されます。
この経験から私は、五感の刺激が減ることで私たちの身体や心に大きな影響をもたらしたのではないかと考えました。また、もしそうであるなら、どのようにして心身のバランス、人間としての機能を取り戻すことができるのかと。
The Beginning of Traveling Tea House
Since 2022, I have been involved in an artist-in-residence program(FS x FH artist in residence) at Fukuroda Psychiatric Hospital in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture.
When the project first began, strict restrictions due to COVID-19 were still in place, making it necessary to conduct workshops and other activities online. The lack of contact and face-to-face communication via digital devices limited the use of the five senses.
Through this experience, I began to wonder whether the reduction of sensory stimulation had a significant impact on our bodies and minds. If so, how are we able to restore balance to our physical and mental states, and recover essential human functions.
藍と蚊帳のTea House
私が徳島から送った藍の種を袋田病院の自然農園「ここあ農園」が育て、私の滞在中に、病院関係者と共に藍の葉で布を染め、徳島の古民家でみつけてきた蚊帳をみなで修繕し、いつもの院内とは違うその青い空間で「ここあ農園」が作った藍のお茶を飲みお互いの話をしました。触覚や嗅覚を刺激することで何かを連想する、共同作業することで記憶の共有も狙っています。
日本の伝統では、蚊帳は家の女性たちが一日で手作りされなければならないものでした。それらは邪気や虫から身を守るために「藍」で染められます。蚊帳が完成すると、女性たちはその中に入り、祝い、語らい、夢や不安を分かち合ったといいます。
この伝統や人々の営みに着想を得て、Traveling Tea Houseを袋田病院で展開することになってゆきました。
Tea House from indigo and mosquito net
indigo seeds sent by me from Tokushima were grown at the hospital’s Natural Farming Department Cocoa Farm. During my stay, I and hospital staff and clients dyed fabric with indigo leaves, repaired mosquito nets found in an old traditional house in Tokushima, and gathered in this blue space—different from the usual hospital environment—to have indigo tea made by Cocoa Farm and share stories with one another.
By stimulating the senses of touch and smell, the project aims to evoke memories, and through collaborative work, to create shared experiences and collective memory.
In Japanese tradition, mosquito nets were traditionally hand-sewn by women of the household within a single day. They were dyed with indigo to protect against insects and evil spirits. Once completed, the women would sit inside, to celebrate, talk together, and share their dreams and fears.
Inspired by this tradition and way of life, Traveling Tea House gradually took shape at Fukuroda Hospital.
Traveling Tea Houseのこれから
20年以上にわたる様々なアート活動を通して養われてきた袋田病院医療スタッフの部外者（この場合アーティスト）への関わり方や柔軟な対応が、医療の現場を知らない私にとっての大きなやりがいや手応えにもなっていきました。また、関わり始めた当初よりも人々の心の変化や内側を少しづつ実感できるようになりました。そして、袋田病院で体験したこと、また当事者の生の声を一人の人間の声として社会に届けることの大切さも日々強く感じており、私は10年関わることを決めました。
関係者の思いをのせた「Traveling Tea House」は、今も旅の途中です。
袋田病院から生まれたこのプロジェクトは、新たな出会いを求めて病院の外へ飛び出し、共に体験することを目的として継続しています。これまで、オランダで3箇所、また国内では大阪万博やギャラリー、学校などアートや医療現場だけでなく様々な場所で開催してきました。お茶会の開催にご興味ある方はぜひご連絡ください。

The Future of Traveling Tea House
Through more than 20 years of diverse art activities, the medical staff at Fukuroda Hospital have cultivated, flexibly adapted, and welcomed outsiders (in this case, artists) into their facility. As someone unfamiliar with the medical field, I found being immersed in this environment to be rewarding and gained a sense of fulfillment. Over time, I also began to sense a gradual change in people’s hearts and inner worlds.
I have come to strongly feel the importance of bringing to society what I witnessed at Fukuroda Hospital, along with the firsthand voices of those involved and decided to commit to the project for a ten year period.
“Traveling Tea House” carrying the thoughts and feelings of all those involved, is still journeying.
Emerging from Fukuroda Hospital, the project steps beyond its walls in search of new encounters, continuing with the purpose of experiencing things together. To date, it has been held at three locations in the Netherlands, as well as at Expo25 in Osaka, a gallery and schools in Japan. It has been presented across diverse sites, not confined to art institutions or medical environments.
